About The Band
The digital library provided here was created as part of a larger residency program called Tanfis II conducted in New York in the fall of 2023. Each individual artist featured here was selected to participate in the Tanfis II residency program, during which Remix ⟷ Culture facilitated a creative collaboration which led to the formation of the band Zalazil. One of the leading Arab violinists in the U.S., Sami Abu Shumays is internationally known as a master of the maqam system. He is co-author of the acclaimed book Inside Arabic Music, founder and director of the ensemble Zikrayat, and creator of the YouTube series Maqam Lessons.
Huda Asfour is a firm believer in transcending boundaries, evident in her roles as a musician and educator. Currently based in Brooklyn, her musical journey began early in conservatories in Tunisia and Palestine, culminating in collaborations worldwide. With two studio albums, "Mars... Back and Forth" (2011) and "Kouni" (2018), to her credit, Huda has also composed music for film and multimedia projects, and has collaborated and featured with musicians internationally.
An accomplished Palestinian musician based in New York City, Zafer Tawil is a virtuoso on oud, violin, and qanoun, and is a master of Arabic percussion. He has performed with numerous musicians, ranging from the pop star Sting to avant-garde composer/performer Elliot Sharpe to masters of Arabic music such as Simon Shaheen, Chab Mami, Bassam Saba, and George Ziadeh, among many others.
Mona Miari is an independent Palestinian/American artist, singer/songwriter, and lawyer based in New York City. Born in Chicago, IL, Mona’s journey led her to Palestine during her youth, where she embarked on her music career. Her remarkable talent gained recognition by healing her first major concert at the prestigious “Jerusalem – The Capital of Arabic Culture 2009” festival.
Eden Zane is a Syrian-American singer-songwriter living in New York City. He has garnered acclaim from the New York Times for his baritone that conveys “romance, elegance, and gusto.” Eden is renowned for his velvety vocals and superb delivery of songs by legends Mohamed Abdul Wahab and Abdul Halim Hafiz. Inspired by Eastern and Western influences, his own original songs are a hauntingly delicate fusion of the two.
Alia Haju is a Brooklyn-based multidisciplinary artist, filmmaker, and musician. Tar, Riq, and her inimitable vocals drew her to the stage first in Beirut and later, after fleeing Lebanon for the second time, in New York.
Michael Joseph Burdi is a multi-instrumentalist and composer from Brooklyn, NY of Syrian/Lebanese and Italian decent. Michael plays traditional Arab folk and classical music on oud, darbouka and riq.
Nezih Antakli is a NYC-based percussionist and graduate of the University for the Arts in Rotterdam, NL. He has performed at renowned venues such as the Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts, as well as on various Broadway and theater productions.
Alber Baseel is a Percussionist/Drummer from Bethlehem, Palestine. At 14 Alber began his conservatory music education in Bethlehem, studying Classical Arabic tradition. In 2021 Alber completed his Bachelor degree in Music from Berklee College of Music. Currently based in Brooklyn, NY, Alber is an active full-time professional musician and musical collaborator, spending his time performing, teaching and recording.
One of Arab America's 30 Under 30 (2023) - but ironically uncomfortable with any identity - Nahed Elrayes is a pianist, writer and composer who directed Gaza's first online-streamed concert (Gaza to the World), composed the Sol Band hit A Lover from Palestine, and is now focused on challenging perceptions of his native Palestine through his Instagram series, "Why I Love Gaza".
