The digital library provided here was created as part of a larger residency program called Tanfis I conducted in New York in the fall of 2022. Each individual artist featured here was selected to participate in the Tanfis I residency program, during which Remix ⟷ Culture facilitated a creative collaboration which led to the formation of the quarter and duo featured here, Eylem Basaldi & Friends and Halay Duo respectively. More info on the residency program here, and bios of each individual artist below:

Born in Turkey, the band leader Eylem Basaldi brings SWANA and Balkan musical traditions to life on violin. She is a mainstay of the New York SWANA music scene and has played and recorded with Grammy winner Snarky Puppy, Dave Brubeck, and the Boston Philharmonic.

Born into a musical family in Turkey, Eren Erdogan began playing kaval at the age of 11 and quickly added a suite of wind instruments - including ney, kawala, and zurna - to his repertoire. He completed a master’s degree in Instrumental Education at Istanbul’s Traditional Music Conservatory and went on to collaborate with jazz artists in Turkey and in festivals across the world.

John Murchison is a Brooklyn-based bassist and multi-instrumentalist with expertise in jazz as well as traditional music from the Middle East and Africa. He is currently one of the most in-demand bassists for traditional Arabic music in the United States and performs regularly on qanun, gimbri, oud, ney, and percussion. Inspired by his love of SWANA musical traditions, John cofounded Brooklyn Maqam, an organization dedicated to presenting, promoting, and building community around Arabic music in the NYC area.

With Syrian and Turkish heritage, Nezih Antakli is a NYC-based percussionist and graduate of the University for the Arts in Rotterdam, NL. He has performed at renowned venues such as the Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts, as well as on various Broadway and theater productions.
