On May 2nd, 2009, a group was created in the neighbourhood of São Miguel to care for the enjoyment of its people, and it was called Samba de Coco Trupé de Arcoverde. Formed and led by Master Ciço Gomes, who has himself been singing samba de coco since he was 15 years old in an ancient group led by the late Master Ivo Lopes, the group was initially called Olhos d’Água dos Bredos - the ancient name by which the town of Arcoverde was known - and then Coco dos Mestres (because of the participation of Biu Neguinho, known as the creator of the rhythm’s current form in Arcoverde). These names lasted for very little time, as the syncopated, embracing rhythm created by the handcrafted wooden clogs - called trupé - became the signature of the group, informing its ultimate name. Samba de coco traces some of its roots to Brazil's African ancestors, as well as the embolada - the faceoff between two singers where each improvises verses in a very strict traditional musical metric.

The below film was created as part of a free filmmaking workshop provided by Remix ⟷ Culture to the youngest members of Coco Trupé. Our approach was to teach the youth how to film and lead interviews, so that they could document the stories of the band as part of an intergenerational conversation between themselves, rather than having an outsider asking questions.
